Open Phones at Last
November 21st, 2006 by Gordon Cook
James Enck wrote earlier today: I really had a great time putting together the 10 Things presentation from last month’s Telco 2.0 event, but these things are really only meaningful if they stimulate some thought, discussion, and a basis for moving forward. So I’m really . . . . Ian Hay, who has a real job within a genuine EuroTelco, has taken the concept as a point of departure for a survey trying to get at something more constructive. I’m still absorbing his post, but one thing that leaps out from the list immediately is that the word “open” appears in four out of ten items on the wish list. [snip]
COOK’S Edge: fifth on the list is “open Handset”
which is my segway to an amazing experience i had yesterday. Jerry Michalski has developed a wiki-based community he calls Yi-Tan: Conversations About Change
A key component is The Yi-Tan Weekly Technology Call.
Yesterday’s call was titled Open Phones at Last
Jerry saw my blog post on the open moko neo1973 phone and invited me to participate. He emailed me the following teaser:
Until recently, there hasn’t really been an open phone. Now a few offers are on the way, including Trolltech’s Greenphone and First International Computing’s Neo1973.
What, exactly, would one do with an open phone? Glad you asked.
With open phone system expert Dean Collins and a few friends, let’s discuss:
What opportunities do open phones open?
How will open phones make it to market if carriers don’t favor openness? Is VoIP the path?
When will these offers actually be available? Will they succeed?
Cook’s Edge: the experience was amazing. And the information fascinating. I shall be using and excerpting the data there in my next news letter. The calls are archived and available as podcasts. A fantastic resource. Take a bow Jerry and friends!
Hey thanks, Gordon! Glad you liked the call. We may return to the open phones topic next Monday, depending whether a guest I’ve lined up on a different topic confirms.
The weekly calls are Mondays at 10:30am Pacific. They last 35 minutes. If anyone would like to get the invites, which contain the call details, please email me: jerry at sociate dot com.
Thanks again!
